Stars don’t Lie

As Carlos is staring at the night sky as it creeps in, Miguel is witnessing the stars disappearing into the early morning. He makes his way back to his village and notices the mountain region appears strange.”

“You are just now coming home?” Manuel asks and Miguel enters through the front door.

“Something is seriously wrong, Dad,” Miguel says.

“The stars again?”

“The mountains too.”

“What is wrong with the mountains?”

“They are not exactly right.”

“They look alright to me.”

“Dad, the mountains are the right ones but the ground is slightly different and the stars are in the wrong parts of the sky. We are in Australia.”

“How come no one else shares your view?”

“I don’t know why everyone does not see it. Stars don’t lie, they show where we are and we are not in Mexico anymore.”

“You need sleep, son. Get some and when you wake I will have some food laid out for you.”

Miguel lays down and drifts off quickly. He wakes during the afternoon and the men are playing a game of sticks which involves taking a stick and knocking around rock around much like a hockey game on dirt. He smiles and joins Sarah and Laura with the other non-playing villagers and spectates. The strangeness of the mountains and stars seem to drift away as he is preoccupied with the merriment of village life. He even cheers his dad on as Manuel and Zane battle for points. It is a fierce and dusty game as the villagers laugh and cheer. Finally, Zane lands the game point winning for his team.

Manuel puts his arm around Zane. “That was great,” he tells him.

Zane replies with pride. “I thought you had me there for a moment.”

Miguel looks on with happiness his concerns forgotten. What does anything matter when there are good times like these? he thinks. At this moment the world seems right as the villagers share special sweet bread and share stories with each other. The fiesta carries on to the late evening as the stars break out and Miguel looks up and is again reminded they are not in the right place.

Hector yells out, “Well, Miguel, the stars still wrong?”

“The stars don’t lie,” Miguel replies.

Later that night as everyone turns in Miguel goes quietly to his bed and stares through the hole in his ceiling. Manuel looks up at his son wishing he could convince him that everything is all right.

“Ma’am, the dosage has been reduced as directed and we still have stable acceptance of the environment,” the soldier reports to Jill that same evening.

“Very good. What about the boy?” she asks.

“He still questions where they are but seems more withdrawn now.”

Jill stares at the monitor as the lights dim out in the village one by one.

“They had a good day of fun today,” the scientist reports.

“Good. They deserve it.” Jill walks back to her dorm room to sleep.

The next morning, Jill gathers the reports and meets with the director.

“We had a good day yesterday,” she tells Charles. “We are almost down to no drug usage now and they are still accepting the environment variables.
