Chapter Ten
Do You Remember?
Amanda came back into the cabin and hung up her coat. At the same time, Patrick returned to his Xbox. âYou just missed Marmel,â Amanda said. âI saw him when I went outside!â
âYour elf who only shows up when Iâm not around?â
âYes, and I was right. I mean, about Mom and Dad, and what happens to them if we donât prove Marmel wrong.â
Patrick sat on the floor by his Xbox and picked up where he left off. âThere is no elf.â
âNo, listen. This is really important. Weâve got to do two nice things together. All of us.â
âThatâs supposed to make our stuff work again?â Patrick asked.
âItâs way more important than that. Itâs about helping our family. So just go along, okay?â
Their parents came into the living room. Mr. Krumwerth picked up the remote and pointed it at the TV.
âAny luck?â Mrs. Krumwerth asked.
He threw the remote onto the sofa. âNo, itâs still out.â
âWhat are we going to do if none of our stuffâs working?â Patrick asked.
âProbably have the worst Christmas Eve ever,â Mr. Krumwerth answered, flopping onto the sofa.
âMaybe we could figure out something to do together,â Amanda said. She tried not to sound desperate, but she had to get her familyâall four of themâto do something nice together, soon.
Mrs. Krumwerth went to the computer and started pressing buttons. âLike what?â
Amanda thought for a moment. âWhat about charades? You love charades, right Mom?â
âYou know what, thatâs a good idea. We havenât played charades in forever. Patrick, will you play?â
He thought it over for a moment, then answered, âYeah, sure.â
âDavid?â Mrs. Krumwerth asked.
âPretend Iâm not here.â
âWe canât play unless we all play,â Amanda pointed out.
Her dad continued flipping through his magazine. âI don't like charades.â
âCâmon,â Mrs. Krumwerth said. âYou and Patrick against Amanda and me. You can go first.â
âOh, all right. We can try it. But youâre really making me wish the TV would come on.â
Amanda and Mrs. Krumwerth sat on the floor in front of the fireplace. Patrick and Mr. Krumwerth sat on the sofa. After a few moments, Amanda and her mom came up with a word. âThe category is well-known places,â Mrs. Krumwerth announced. âPatrick, come here and Iâll give you the word.â
She whispered in Patrickâs ear. He nodded. âOkay, give me a sec⦠Okay, Iâm ready. Dad, are you ready?â
âReady as Iâll ever be.â
âOkay,â Mrs. Krumwerth said, looking at her watch. âTwo minutesâgo!â
Patrick held up one finger, then two fingers.
âOne word, two syllables,â Mr. Krumwerth said.
Patrick nodded, then looked up at the ceiling, put his hands above his head, and wiggled his fingers.
âHorns? Antlers? Head lice?â
Patrick shook his head. Then he started pumping his hands toward the ceiling, making bursts with his fingers, over and over.
âFives? Tens? Dancing?â
Amanda knew what Patrick was trying to communicate. She couldnât help laughing at her fatherâs guesses.
Patrick kept shaking his head. Then he reached for the ceiling, still making bursts with his fingers. He brought his arms down, reaching as far out to his sides as he could.
âDouble dream hands!â Mr.
