Chapter 7
She made no move to follow me as I walked. I assumed she turned her attention back to Koram, who was still unconscious and therefore necessary for her to keep alive. It surprised me that a cultivator at his level had still not woken up by the time I left, and that he had not been able to handle the same injuries I could, but I would not find my answers here. I passed by the tree of qi Source energy to place a small number of the plum-like fruits into my pack, which Lunei had thoughtfully recovered for me. My Soulscape swallowed the two smallest ones happily and greedily, then pulsed out a desire to absorb a few of the leaves and a single piece of the treeâs bark. When it was finally finished, I chose to hike up a densely wooded hill, one that gave me a good view of the hot spring below. I had sworn to keep secret all of the events within an hour of my arrival at the hot spring. I was worried that my Sourcevow would somehow still apply if I returned to the Soulship too soon, so I resolved to spend at least an hour somewhere in seclusion before I returned to Vessa. So until then, I would keep an eye on Koram, and let my Soulscape absorb whatever else it wished.
Koram and Lunei were a great distance away, but my vision had been enhanced several times over since the beginning of the day. I watched Koram finally wake up and remove himself from the steaming outdoor bath and stretch, much like I had. Judging by his movements, he seemed impressed with the changes wrought upon the arm Lunei had so thoroughly broken, and disappointed with the amount of benefits that the rest of his body had gained. Lunei stomped toward him with her hand raised, and he immediately flinched and stopped moving his mouth. The sect maiden lowered her hand and began speaking with a frosted face. He shook his head immediately, and then she spoke again, her mouth moving in a way that suggested clipped, angry sentences. Then she walked right up to him, pointing the finger of one hand directly into his chest while pointing the other far out into the woods, whispering fiercely with bared teeth. Koramâs face became even paler, and then he sagged his shoulders and began speaking slowly, as if he was reciting some formal phrase or declaration. Lunei gave him an angry, but satisfied nod and thrust his clothes at him, stomping off out of the clearing. She turned her head to shout what sounded like a threat to leave him behind if he did not keep up as she kept walking. Koram stumbled as he tried to dress and chase after her at the same time.
I was slightly amused, but my mind still played back the name he had called his charter, the power he claimed it wielded, and the fact that his native language was that of the Glorious Stateâs.
