Chapter 9

I wandered into the living room with my nose stuck in the dusty old pages of a spell book. The black witch might be cranky as a sack full of rabid raccoons, but she had helped the fae settle. And the feedback she'd given me about my herbal book outline had actually been useful. She had even loaned me a couple musty old books so I could see how spell books laid out ingredients. Bonus, these ones were hardly even dark at all. She insisted that whole "black witch" thing was just a patriarchal societal label meant to alienate women of power. But I was reserving judgment on that.

Rover chattered and I lifted my foot higher to avoid stepping on his pink, naked little tail. "Sorry boy," I muttered as I made my way toward the couch, finally pulling my attention away from a spell for easing arthritis that used willow bark but made no mention of how or when to gather it for maximum potency.

When I looked up and saw Awan, all of my other thoughts scattered like spiders surprised out of their dark hiding spots.

Powers That Be, the man got weirdly more attractive every time I saw him. Currently, he was curled up on the couch with a fluffy afghan wrapped around him—courtesy of crazy aunt Juanita when she'd heard of our success. His mop of brown hair was now shiny and thick, and lifting up in little whirls and waves. He was gazing with rapt attention at Luna as she handed over a plate piled high with baked goods. "And don't let that damned cat know I gave these to you," she warned, clearly having to work at keeping her expression stern in the face of Awan's new, nerdy, boyish glow.

Awan nodded solemnly. "I swear it, alpha."

Luna straightened, a slight blush on her cheeks and a smile escaping before she could hide it. She met my eyes and shrugged sheepishly, as if she'd just been caught doing something embarrassing. Oh, Powers That Be, I think Luna had a thing for geeks.

I laughed. "Still fattening him up?"

She sighed and came around the back of the couch to give me a hug before drifting off toward the kitchen again, humming and smelling of cinnamon and cloves.

I joined Awan, taking the chair opposite his perch on the couch. "You're looking better every day," I said happily. Day four, and no catastrophe had occurred with his new body. In fact, he was fleshing out, losing the telltale signs of chronic, prolonged illness. His cheeks were fuller, and his eyes no longer had dark circles under them. His skin was back to a normal, light brown color. He was…gangly and scrawny still, but somehow it worked. He was also ridiculously young looking.

He smiled at me, the corners of his deep brown eyes crinkling. "I'm feeling stronger, relatively. Though I still feel like a mere babe," he said, frowning down at his hands where they held the plate. "It is taking longer to adapt to this body than ever before.
