“It’s a vampire!” Jimmy said. “A vampire house!”

“But … but houses don’t have blood,” Bob said.

“They must have something in them, something this Old House needs to live,” Jimmy said.

“Houses aren’t alive!” Bob said* “They’re just lumber and shingles, bricks and stones …”

“Not alive like you or I,” Jimmy said, “but alive nonetheless. They were made from living things—trees. Maybe the Indians were right when they talked about everything having a spirit, even rocks and trees! Maybe this thing sucks out their spirits, making them weak and worn-out looking.”

“But where did it come from?” Bob asked.

“Space maybe,” Jimmy said. “Like those things in science fiction books and movies.”

“Wow!” Bob said. “A real life space monster—and it looks like a house!”

“What a perfect disguise,” Jimmy said. “Who would expect a house to be from outer space?”

“And who would expect it to be a vampire?” Bob said. “A vampire that sucks the juice out of houses!”

“Yeah,” Jimmy said, “and pretty soon the other houses will just fall down, and this space beast will move on to another unsuspecting neighborhood full of unsuspecting adults!”

“We’ve got to stop it,” Bob said. “Before it’s too late. But how?”

Bosco was thrashing wildly now, trying to get loose.

“Shhhhhh, you two,” Jimmy said. “Here it comes.”
