FIVE

Victoria Falls, Zambezi River

The border between Zambia and Zimbabwe

Everly

ALTHOUGH THERE ARE MANY earthquakes which often occur across this great big continent—most of which happen in the Great Rift Valley—the vicious rumbling beneath where I stand right now has nothing at all to do with tectonic plates shifting.

Only strangely and magnificently has to do with water…

So

much

water.

Millions and millions of gallons of water.

The water flows through six countries along the Zambezi River and spreads out for miles before it descends over these impressively high falls. It’s one endless powerful pour directly into what seems to be a white frothy abyss before it gets carried along and ultimately empties thousands of kilometers away in the Indian Ocean.

It’s an incredible sight.

And is considered to be one of the world’s largest waterfalls due to its width.

Often called Mosi-oa-Tunya which means “the smoke that thunders.”

This creation and existence of this place for the last three million years is some of Mother Nature’s best work. It’s pure. Untouched. Beautiful right down to its bedrock.

Holding on to my hat, I twist to my right to find Yasha peering over the railing of this observation bridge. Then with the biggest smile I’ve ever seen on her face, she stands straight.

“This is AMAZING!” With a squeal, she tosses her arms up in the air and then cranes her neck to the clear sky above which now burns orange and blue as the sun dips toward the horizon.

I can’t help but laugh at her excitement.

She’s happy, carefree, and wild.

The way I have always remembered her and always would.

Like a prisoner of love, I’m locked up in her gaze for a beat. I smile before she twists away from me to face all the natural beauty ahead once more and to talk to our guide, Abeni, whose ability to chitchat extensively rivals that of Anderson Cooper’s.

I suck in a huge breath and then exhale hard. “Yes, it is most definitely incredible!” I laugh.

We’re hundreds of meters high above the falls. Laid out ahead of us are numerous cliff faces and lengthy rocky divides, most of which are covered in thick foliage, others are only bare rock. It’s a picturesque blend of verdant green and various shades of gray ahead. The powerful flow of the water along with its vicious current cuts a path through most of them but come to converge in one place as a single and immense flow.

Yasha and Abeni while wearing silly smiles scream and shout as loud as they’re able to manage without going hoarse over the wild roar of the water and take snapshots with their cellphones.

To the right of them and off in the distance, I spot Devil’s Pool at the ledge of the fall.

It’s a place where those who are brave enough—or plain crazy enough—and don’t care about the risk of being swept over the edge and sent plummeting to their own watery deaths at the bottom and want to swim here can.

“No bloody way.” I whisper the words to myself as I stand here, still holding on to my hat.
