Chapter Eleven

My hair looks like I have had a really bad blow dry, I caught sight of it in a mirror and had a fright. Mrs Bell offered me a brush. The brush is currently still in my hair, it got stuck when I tried to pull it through a giant knot; I gave up trying. The bad blow dry look will just have to stay.

“Heston, we found something! Well, by we, I mean Huxley found it and now we have found out what is causing this.” He looks towards the brush in my hair and just shakes his head; I don’t explain. “Huxley saw a light, so we went to inspect it; it’s not too far away from where Gertie and her family are in Twiddlestone. We couldn’t get too close, but it looks like the Exit Door.”

His eyebrows narrow and there’s a look of fear in his eyes. “It’s funny you would say that.” He grabs a book off his side table and opens it to the middle flicking through the pages so fast I am afraid he may tear them. “Ah, here it is. There’s a snippet in here about the Exit Door. It says leaving the door open could lead to consequences; I was reading it out of curiosity, not because I suspected it.”

“Consequences! Consequences meaning a deep freeze?” There is a burning worry in my chest.

“I don’t know, there’s nothing else about it in here. It says refer to the Exit Door book, but I looked through the books I have and there’s nothing here.”

“I don’t remember seeing a book about that, but then again, I wasn’t looking for one. What about you, Huxley?”

“I didn’t see anything.” He chows down on his part-bitten nails again.

“Surely, it can’t be the Exit Door,” Heston says. “After all, it’s the royals that keep it; Yvonne wouldn’t open the door and leave it. I know she wouldn’t.”

Huxley’s leaning against the wall, quiet but showing his feelings towards Heston’s last remark plainly on his face.

“Got something to say, Huxley? You don’t look like you agree,” Heston says, also picking up on Huxley’s sudden change in attitude.

“Oh no, I’m fine, nothing to say here, please carry on.”

“You clearly do have something to say, feel free to share with the room. We would both love to hear what you have to say.” Heston has now leaned forward, fully focussed on Heston.

“Just your last comment, ‘it’s the royals that keep it, Yvonne wouldn’t open the door and leave it’ how do you know she wouldn’t? Do you really know Yvonne, you haven’t seen her in how long? She could have completely changed or better yet not changed, just hid her evilness like her father.”

“I know Yvonne, she wouldn’t do that whether I have seen her in a while or not. She doesn’t have a bad bone in her body.”

“Do you know her like you knew Maxim? You know the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, like father like daughter, I say.” He shrugs.
