CHAPTER 20

“Let’s go!” Naomi tugged at my shoulder.

“Chaquille!” I shouted.

I grasped at his ankles as three bear-sized guys stomped him. Chaquille was doing his best to fight his way off the floor and people around us screamed and scattered. Joya was wide-eyed and frozen in a corner. Theodora searched the room for the exit signs. Naomi held me back as I tried to claw my way back to Chaquille. People scampered out of the hall and made enough room for Chaquille to roll once and hop to his feet. For a moment, his eyes met mine. I broke free from Naomi’s grasp and with a mean growl, I jumped on one goon. I pummeled the back of his head and neck with the intensity of Mom and the speed of Grandpa Ez.

I scratched at his throat so hard, digging deep until I drew blood. His whimpers sounded like Jaxon Green when I used my strength to throw him into the incinerator. As fast as Jaxon danced into my memories, Mr. Chestnut was there too, in my mind. I could scratch out his eyes the same way I was doing this ogre. Taking care of myself would be my main priority and I wouldn’t stay locked in my dorm room. I earned the right to enjoy my freshman year just like everyone else. Mr. Chestnut wouldn’t stop my shine. Getting to him before he got to me would be my second main priority. I squeezed my arms around this dude’s fat neck even tighter. He yelped and swung his arms around his back, trying to shake me off. I peeked over his shoulder. Chaquille stood for one millisecond with his mouth gaped staring at me. When he snapped out of it, he rushed us.

Before long, Naomi, Theodora, and anyone else tipsy enough to jump in, rushed the center of the room. It seemed like it was forever, but it was about three minutes before the hall lights flickered on and the police burst into the room. Joya was closest to the exit door, and she raced out with Theodora, a terrified Dylan, Ivelisse, and Naomi hot on her heels. I extended a hand to Chaquille while he had the big guy in a headlock. He released his grip around the man’s neck, took my hand, and sprinted to the exit. We dashed from the back of the building and spilled into the alleyway. Running down the short, unpaved pathway, water from the earlier rain kicked up around my boots, clacking down the road.

“Damn, Indy, you down for me like that?” His words were short and strained as he gasped for air. I didn’t respond. My throat was on fire and my legs cramped like a bitch. My body felt loose, it tingled like I was electrocuted.

I was tipsy without being tipsy.

High without being high.

Violence was my dopamine when things got to be too much. Jumping on that guy’s back made me feel proud. I could take care of myself, and I would.
