Chapter Eleven

He paid for the restaurant bill—Apphia had left him much more than half of the check—and then started strolling toward the address that she’d sent him.

Nearly half the bottle of wine had still been on the table, but he left it untouched. He wanted to be completely sober in her house. He had a lot of information to absorb, and he still wasn’t entirely sure how powerful his memory ability actually was.

The apartment was close to the restaurant, on a street with two-story buildings and a flat facade. It took him a few different keys before he found the one that opened the door. He half-expected someone to come rushing over saying that this wasn’t his apartment, but was the apartment of Lieutenant-Colonel Lazar and he shouldn’t have been entering, but no one did.

Inside the apartment was clean, but definitely lived in.

He wondered if she’d tidied up because she knew he was coming round, or whether it always looked like this. He felt awkward for a moment, standing in the living room of someone else’s home, but he soon came back to himself.

He had no idea how much of a time crunch he was actually on. Her situation might not take a couple of hours, and she might be back in ten minutes if one of the roadblocks actually caught this guy trying to leave.

First he turned on the TV so that he could rush back to collapse into the couch and pretend that was what he’d spent his time doing when she came back. He stuck on a movie he’d seen before so he’d be able to talk about the plot if she tried to talk to him about it.

Then, he started nosing around her apartment searching for sensitive information. Back on Earth he was sure there were protocols about not taking files home, but he hoped that maybe Eden was less strict about that kind of thing.

Either that it was less strict, or that Apphia didn’t mind breaking a few rules so that she could keep working from home. He got the sense she was a bit of a workaholic.

She had a small office in the apartment. It had clearly been a small, second bedroom, but she’d stuck a desk and plenty of shelves into it instead. The shelves were all stuffed with files.

His eyes widened.

“Jackpot.”

He worked as quickly as possible deciphering the filing system she used. It was sorted chronologically.

His first port of call was finding the case that she was currently working on. She needed information about Tabitha, and she hoped the case file would include some of it since there was nothing obviously marked personnel.

The file was easy enough to find, and he scanned the information as rapidly as possible. He got her full name at least, and the place that she’d been working undercover at. Then, he hit the jackpot. Her address. She’d been debriefed at her house by Apphia herself, and so the address was there right in front of him. He
