2. Subtract the duration of the activity and then add 1 to equate to the latest the activity can begin.

3. To find the LS of the predecessor activity, simply go to one day before the LS of the current activity.

For example, in Figure 8-6, notice how Activities H and I both have an LF

of 14, just one day before Activity J is slated to begin.

4. Whenever an activity has two successors, as in Activity C, always choose the smaller of the two Late Starts.

This is because the activity must finish just one day prior to the scheduled start date of the successor.

5. Complete the backward pass for all paths in the project.

Applying float to the project

Knowing that you have a couple days of float here and there throughout your project network diagram can make a big difference. These are activities that can be strategically delayed without delaying the end date of your project.

If some activities are slipping behind schedule, or you need to move resources from one activity to another, you can take advantage of activities that have float and delay their start date — or expand their duration.
