Support and learning to be ‘good enough’ parents

It is now clear that the following interventions can assist in lessening the barriers for parents with learning difficulties and in enhancing their skills:

Social networks and support are key factors in assisting parents with learning difficulties to become and continue to be ‘good enough’ parents, as such interventions should pay attention to both strengthening networks and ensuring they are not disrupted.

Specialist assessment tools, such as those developed by McGaw et al (2007), should be used to assist in assessing support needs and identifying strengths as well as gaps.

Group work is effective if adjusted to the learning styles of the parent with learning difficulties to include concrete examples, modelling and role-play. If delivered in the home rather than the agency, problems of generalisation of learning can be avoided.

Long-term, multi-agency services and interventions work are required to avoid a revolving door cycle (Tarleton et al, 2006), together with information and resources adapted to their needs.

In light of parents’ anxieties about statutory authorities and problems in understanding uncoordinated referral and eligibility processes, independent advocacy (MacIntyre and Stewart, 2008) should be provided.
