In Retrospect

“America’s Divorce Problem” was written in 1999, soon after the project had started. It was clearly intended as an overview of the issues and hypotheses we were going to pursue, not a report of findings. What we actually found in the course of five years of data collection and another (roughly) five years of analysis and writing is reported in full scholarly detail in the book and in several journal articles. But among the many versions of the results that we prepared, my favorite is the post-project report that we sent to every participant in the study, a lightly edited version of which follows.
