In the introductory chapter to Bowling Alone, Putnam says that “Dozens of studies confirmed that education was by far the best predictor of engagement in civic life.”13 Moreover, the literature review referred to immediately above cites research showing that “Level of education is the most consistent predictor of volunteering.”14 The present prediction, therefore, is that education as a form of “human capital” will translate not only into occupational assets, but into this form of social capital as well.

So it does. Table 6.5 displays an education effect an order of magnitude beyond anything seen thus far. The 0 groups membership zone shrinks by over 30% (43.6% to 12.4%) and the 5 or more groups zone more than triples (9.2% to 32.6%) between the less than high school and college rows.15 Turning immediately to Table 6.6, the dramatic effect for Voluntary Association is corroborated for Volunteering. Note that the zero-response is cut about in half (72.9% to 36.1%), and the 10-53 times zone nearly triples in size (11.5% to 30.7%) across the educational extremes.16 Clearly, education is a prime mover in the appreciation of America’s stock of social capital.
