When you do an interoceptive exposure, as with any exposure, you refrain from doing any avoidance or safety behaviors you normally might do to prevent or make those sensations go away. We’ll talk more about doing this type of exposure in chapter 10.

Your Exposure Ladder

You will build your exposure ladder in five steps. The first step is choosing the best trigger situation for your exposure. Second, you will tease out any sub-situations. This will make your exposure more manageable and help you target your particular fears. Third, once you’ve chosen your trigger situation (or sub-situation), you will give a SUDS rating to being in it without doing your avoidance and safety behaviors. Fourth, you will rank order your SUDS ratings. Finally, the fifth step is using those rank-ordered ratings to build a ladder for your first exposures. We will go through this process step by step, so hang in there if this sounds complicated.
