HABITATS AND ECOSYSTEMS

We already know that Tyrannosaurus rex lived right at the end of the time when dinosaurs dominated life on Earth and only died out 66 million years ago. This stage is called the Maastrichtian age (at the very end of the Cretaceous period). In the early part of the Late Cretaceous period, the climate was warm. It became cooler at the end of the Late Cretaceous but Earth was still warmer than it is today. Tropical areas were near the Equator (the same as now). The far north or south (what are the cold polar regions today) were more temperate and had seasons like ours, with warmer summers and colder winters. This probably meant that some dinosaurs needed to migrate during the year to follow food and warmer conditions. It was still too warm for there to be ice at either the northern or southern poles at the end of the Late Cretaceous.
