2. Diplodocus vertebrae were incredibly fragile.

Even the very big bones in the neck were not solid; each was hollow and supported by a network of plates and struts. This made them very light when the animal was alive, so that the neck wasn’t too heavy, but it also allowed for air sacs inside many of the bones. These air sacs helped these huge animals to breathe.

3. Long neck.

Diplodocus had at least 15 vertebrae in the neck, whereas humans only have seven. To help keep the neck stable, special long pieces of bone, sat on the underside of the vertebrae. These are called ‘cervical ribs’ and overlap, to help muscles attach and to keep the neck strong.
