It took three days for the Queen to find the princess, filthy and hungry, cowering between the woodpiles behind the kitchens.

“There you are, cursed one,” the Queen sighed, more annoyed than relieved.

“Don’t look. Don’t look,” the little princess muttered, dirty hands yanking her hood tighter around her head, her face pressed to the stacks of firewood.

“You needn’t worry about me.” The Queen smiled down at the princess’s crumpled form. “I have old magic to protect me from your terrible curse. I am the only person who can stand to look upon you now.”

Snow stopped muttering but did not look up.

The Queen sighed and straightened. “We simply cannot have you living in a woodpile, nor would it endear me to the kingdom if it were known I loosed your curse on any who might stumble across you, so we have boarded off your apartments. You will live there with nothing but your shame to keep you company.”

“Nurse?” Snow asked, fear so deep she could not name it unfurled in her chest.

The Queen blew out a long sigh. “She did not survive the touch of your curse.”

Snow let out a low-key mewling howl of pain and pressed her tiny forehead harder against the chopped wood.
