he first light of dawn caressed Snow’s cheek with one lavender tinted ray. Snow turned into the light, cocooned between heartbeats in a half-dream state where reality was held at bay. Then the events of the day and night before came crashing down upon her and Snow opened flooded eyes. Her cheeks throbbed and burned, and Snow reached for the twin lines of stitches, before a hand closed over her wrist.

Ransford’s speckled blue gaze met hers head on, and she watched his jaw tighten the instant before he held one finger to his lips. Without a sound, he extracted himself from the web of arms and legs of his collapsed brethren, then pulled Snow to her feet. The two stepped over Studs’ snoring form, and Olin’s long legs, twitching in his sleep like a dreaming dog.

The two slipped up stairs and dressed silently, Ransford in coarse breeches and a raw linen shirt, Snow in a simple shift of fine silk, having discarded the bloodstained lavender dress she had worn on top of it.

Then, hand in hand, they were out the door, wrapped in Ransford’s cloak and a borrowed one, too long for Snow by half and so wide that she could have wrapped it around herself twice. Ransford led her through the early light of dawn and into the still shadowed forest, moving swiftly away from the house.

“Where are you taking me?” Snow asked when they were far beyond the clearing.

Ransford tossed a crooked grin over his shoulder and Snow’s heart leapt in her chest.

“There is a place I go sometimes,” Ransford answered. “It has helped heal some old wounds, and I want to share it with you.”

Dawn had bloomed into full, dazzling morning before they pushed through the branches of thick undergrowth and stepped into the light.

Ransford drew to a stop, releasing Snow’s hand and turning away slightly, before Snow could see the hesitation in his face.

Tugging her cloak tighter against the morning chill, Snow turned to take in the sun dappled surroundings.

To her right, the craggy rock face dropped away into a dizzying ravine, the edge overflowing with thick moss. Below and beyond, the forest stretched out like an endless sea of green, grey and brown. Snow gasped in delight at the view, then turned to thank Ransford before she realized his attention was focused on the clearing that stretched out behind her.

A heavy carpet of moss extended to the edges of the trees that circled the clearing. Above them the sky was turning a robin’s egg blue. Across the carpet of lush green, snowbells poked through, creating a wide circle of white petals that swayed like sea waves.

“It’s stunning,” Snow sighed, turning back to Ransford, her eyes bright, her face happy as she took in his stiff posture and stoic stillness.

She stepped closer to him again and he turned away from her, his ears bright pink in the warm sun. “Your company makes it that much more wonderful.”

Ransford laughed darkly and turned his gaze to Snow. “I am a monster, but this place has helped me grow beyond that.
