“We’ve hidden everyone,” Stevo said. “They’re safe for the moment. We had to come back. I—I, well, we couldn’t leave you.

I thought you might—might—”

“Might be dead?” Emil grimaced. “God smiled upon me. But not upon these three worthless bastards. I’ve scavenged food, weapons, clothing. There’s even a pup tent. Help me bundle it all up. We can use it.”

Stevo put his hands up, palms out. “Something makes my skin crawl. Do these Germans have evil mulé? ”

“Probably. We will cleanse ourselves of them soon. Please tell me there’s a stream ahead.”

“There is.”

They worked together for several minutes to pack and organize things, then Emil rose and stumbled behind the hornbeam. The corporal was dead. Emil stripped him of his coat and boots and picked up his sidecap, then backed away. “Te bisterdon tumare anava!”

“What?” Stevo asked.

“I curse them. May their names be forgotten.”

“I curse them, too,” Stevo said. “Now let’s hurry away from this horrid place.”

They donned the packs, picked up the rifles, and grabbed the ammo bags and other items. With Palko between them and Stevo in the lead, Emil followed. He tried not to think, concentrating on making his tired body move in a smooth rhythm. But soon, the events of the day rose up in his mind and overwhelmed him. Drina was gone. And Xavi, his son. He couldn’t believe it. He didn’t want to believe it. But even the numbness of his exhausted mind couldn’t hide reality.

They reached an open clearing and waited in the shadows for a moment to listen. Emil looked up at the Snow Moon rising just over the tips of a stand of trees to his left. Wisps of clouds scudded in front of the waning moon, giving it a peculiar rippled effect. If you can hear me, Drina, give me strength. Send spirits to protect us—to protect these last of our troupe. Show us the way.
