AALIYAH

“I won’t be in the office today, Trey.”

“Would it have anything to do with what happened at The Uptown?” Trey asked into the phone.

I looked over at the man I now knew was Elijah Lewis, otherwise known as Smoke, and he shook his head as a reminder to keep quiet and to pretend I had been nowhere close to that club.

“No, not at all. I saw what happened, but I was long gone before the shooting took place.”

“Which makes me even more shocked you aren’t racing over there to find out what happened.” He sounded suspicious and rightfully so. I asked for this story to get down to the bottom of what happened to Shayla but got myself tangled in something that seemed larger than my life I was trying now to keep safe.

Elijah, had been courteous enough to allow me to stay at this property he said he was in the process of leasing, but I didn’t want to overstay my welcome. Not only that, but I also didn’t know if I could trust him beyond the fact that he and the big guy that was with him, saved my life. Lonnie was right, of course, I should have kept my black ass upstairs in the dining room and out of grown folks’ business, but I was never a good listener. Mama Deloris made sure to keep me occupied in any extracurricular activities school and church offered. I sang, I played the piano, I was in Civic Club, was a swimmer. I mean whatever could keep my busy mind active, she signed me up for. I suppose it was time to find a hobby if I made it out of this situation alive. There was at least one more shooter that saw my face and I didn’t get the feeling he wanted to leave any stone unturned. Smoke and Butch were able to kill the two men that killed at least five other people in that basement including the man I was hoping to get more information about. Beast. Beast was now dead, along with some of the answers I had come there for.

“I know, Trey, but Mama Delores asked me to help her with arrangements for Shayla,” I lied.

I felt the eyes of Elijah on my face and I turned away from him as I felt my skin warm under his appraisal. I wasn’t sure what it was about him, but he made me completely aware of myself and of him. Yes, he was fine and not just for an older man, any aged man, but his energy spoke to a part of me that I can’t recall ever had a conversation with anyone else before.

His eyes were dark, and focused, and his broad shoulders made me feel petite and that was unusual as I always felt like … a lot. And in some cases, too much. I was never the small girl. I was too tall for that at five seven. And my BMI would suggest I was more than overweight.
