At night, late into the night, Becky’s lamp on, reading. I listen to the rustle of her pages, remind myself to breathe. Roll over, close my eyes, recall each word of our most recent conversation.

“I’m surprised, with all the reading you do, that you don’t wear glasses,” she remarks.

“I used to. Not so much anymore.”

“I like them, you know. Not so much for seeing—I mean, that’s what contacts are for—but as an accessory, a fine pair of spectacles—maybe oval-shaped with tortoise-shell frames—seems more memorable than . . . I don’t know . . . more striking than a watch at least.”

“So, these spectacles . . . they’re like . . . bracelets . . . for your face?”

“Something like that, yeah.” And then we both burst into sleepy, puerile laughter.
