Let’s go over what we saw in Louisville,” Griffith suggested as the barnstormers bounded back to the bench and the horses faded into the forest.

“Why should we do that?” Graham asked.

Griffith drew his brother and sister closer. “The last few innings, when we’ve been cheering together and focusing on the game, the Travelin’ Nine have been playing much better. But they still haven’t been able to make up any ground. We need to be doing more.”

“What else can we do?” Graham asked. He massaged the baseball like a hurler stepping to the hill.

“When we all hold the baseball, it seems to help, but not all the time. It’s not enough.”

“You think what we learned in Louisville could make the difference?” Ruby asked.

Griffith tapped the cover of Ruby’s journal. “I think it may.”

Ruby smiled. “Aren’t you happy I take good notes?’

Griffith didn’t respond.

“‘Are you taking notes or writing a book?’” Ruby sassed. She teasingly tapped her foot. “I’m waiting for my thank-you.”

“Yes, Ruby.” Griffith sighed. “I’m glad you take good notes. Thank you.”

“That wasn’t so difficult, was it?”

“Now can we go over what we learned?” Griffith asked as Crazy Feet stepped to the dish.

All three huddled around Ruby’s journal. They read together:
