CHAPTER EIGHT

“Want to go explore the lighthouse?”

Skye drank the last of her Coke and crushed the can, nodding. “I need to walk off everything I just ate,” she muttered, still feeling full from all the Mr. Kipling cakes she’d just consumed.

They packed up the rest of the picnic and Skye returned the cooler bag to her shoulder, ignoring Emma’s pouting lips. It was the least she could do after Emma had gone to the effort of preparing everything. She’d have to return the favour, somehow.

Stepping up to the granite porch of the lighthouse, Emma reached for the handle. A heavy thunk sounded as the lock refused to give way. “It’s locked,” Emma said with a sigh. “That’s a shame.”

Skye ran her fingers through the back of her hair. “Oh well,” she said, biting her lip. “What should we do instead?” For a moment, she worried Emma might just cut the day short and head back home. Skye wasn’t ready to leave—not quite yet.

“How about we go get ice cream?” Emma suggested. “I’m pretty sure Mia’s working today. She’ll probably give us a discount.”

“Ice cream sounds good,” Skye said, her heart settling back into a relaxed rhythm.

“Perfect. Then let’s go.”

They walked along the edge of the headland and back down to the promenade, which was packed with kids and tourists, licking ice cream and chip grease from their fingers and brushing the sand off their feet.

Sweet Scoops was a small ice-cream shack on the opposite side of the road to the docks, a string of pink and blue chequered bunting fluttering in the wind as Skye and Emma joined the queue. Beside it, The Waffle Shack had a darker, more luxurious atmosphere with a chocolate-coloured exterior and a caramel crosshatch overlay.

“How much do you reckon these two businesses hate each other?” Skye muttered, comparing the bright, bubbly ice-cream parlour to the fancier waffle hut.

“Oh, there’s definitely rivalry,” Emma agreed with a mischievous smirk. “Mia hates the girl who works there. Or so she says.”

Skye’s lips tweaked, wondering what she meant by that.

“What flavour are you getting?” Emma asked, eyeing the menu by the window, an indecisive look on her face. “Looks like there’s whippy and scooped.”

“Can’t beat a classic vanilla whippy,” Skye said with a nonchalant shrug. “Maybe some caramelised nuts, if I’m feeling adventurous.”

Emma nodded approvingly. “Sounds like a solid choice. I’m going to get a cookies and cream scoop.”

“Oh, Emma!” Mia exclaimed as the two of them stepped up to the window. Her bubble-gum pink hair was pinned up today, loose curls falling around her face. “And Miss Blue.”

“It’s Skye.”

Mia waved a dismissive hand. “Right, right, it’s good to see you again. Are you here for ice-cream?”

Emma playfully rolled her eyes. “What else would we be here for?”

“To see me,” Mia said with a pout. “What can I get you today?”

“I’ll have a cookies and cream.”

“Cone or tub?”

“Cone please.”

“And for Skye?” Mia said, flicking an expectant glance towards her, pale orange eyeshadow glittering around her eyes.

“Oh, um, just a vanilla whippy, please.
