With Vinjoâs stealth device on his wrist and activated, Jak crept toward Tonovanâs cabin. He could sense the general inside but couldnât tell if he was aloneâthe woman heâd taken to bed hadnât been a mage with an auraâor if he was sleeping.
In the quiet corridor, Jakâs heart pounded in his chest, and sweat broke out on his forehead and moistened his palms. He slipped a hand in his jacket and wrapped it around the kerzor.
Swallowing, he stopped outside Tonovanâs cabin and put his ear to the door. With the stealth device activated, Tonovan shouldnât be able to sense him, but if the general was awake, he would see or hear the door open. And he would have time to react. If he was within five feet of the door, he would also be able to see through the stealth deviceâs influence and spot Jak. And kill Jak.
Too bad Jak didnât have a dragon-steel weapon to add to his arsenal. And Tonovan did have such a weapon. Two of them. Would he be sleeping with the dagger or Teziâs axe? Have both close at hand?
If Jak had done this a day earlier, Tezi would still have had her axe, and he could have asked her to help. The chances of overpowering Tonovan would have been much better.
He shook his head. There was no point in wishing for what was not.
A few doors up, Rivlen was in her cabin. Sleeping? Making plans for upcoming dragon battles? Thinking about inviting him into her cabin to enjoy another night together?
Right. He pushed that thought out of his mind, though a part of him hoped that if he was successful and nullified her greatest enemy, she would wrap her arms around him and kiss him thoroughly. More than kiss him.
But he had to be successful for that to happen. It crossed his mind to ask for her help in this. She might not have a dragon-steel weapon, but she had the power to distract Tonovan.
Unfortunately, for her to attack a superior officer would be career suicide. If not actual suicide. If Tonovan didnât kill her, Uthari might.
No, Jak had to do this alone.
If you get into trouble, Shikari spoke into his mind, run up on deck. I will help.
Thank you.
Wishing once more that Shikari could fit down here and be at his side, Jak took a deep breath and gripped the door latch. Would it be locked?
It wasnât. In his arrogance, Tonovan didnât worry about keeping out intruders.
Jakâs first bit of good fortune. The second was that the door didnât creak or make a sound as he eased it open.
A soft red light glowed from a table beside the bed, providing some illumination. It showed Tonovan tangled in the sheets with not one but two naked women draped across him. He lay on his back with his eyes closed, as naked as the women, his arms wrapped around them to secure them to him. One of them had her face to the wall, and
