“YOU WANT TO SUE? I would love to represent you.”

A.J. and Claire sat on Sam’s bed in roommately solidarity while Sam packed for her two-week sojourn.

“This attitude is archaic,” Claire said. “And I should know.”

“No lawsuit. I’m going to take my medicine.” Sam held up two tops. She was having a hard time choosing between her old wardrobe and her new color-enhanced pieces.

Both A.J. and Claire pointed to the China-blue shell. Sam tossed it over a chair and hung the other top back up. “This is Josh’s revenge and he’s entitled.”

“How can you say that?” Claire asked.

“I attacked his turf. I lost. This is his way of getting back at me.”

“And there is always the tiniest, minuscule possibility that he could be right about you being too aggressive.”

“Claire!” Both Sam and A.J. protested.

“All I’m saying is that you—and you, too, A.J.—have a take-no-prisoners style that can be a little, well, you know.” She seemed to shrink under the combined glares of A.J. and Sam.

“Attack someone else before your own incompetence is revealed. Oldest trick in the book,” A.J. said. “That’s what these whiners are doing. I wish Sam hadn’t given in.”

“By doing so, I ended the meeting. It was an inevitable outcome, so I cut short the look-what-Sam-did-wrong phase.” She tossed in the wrinkled beige suit Franco hated. At least it was nonthreatening. The brochure had said there was going to be a wardrobe analysis.

“Good strategy,” A.J. said.

“Well, guys, what else should I pack?”

“How about something pink?” Claire suggested.

“Pink?” Sam made a gagging gesture. “That wasn’t one of my colors before I knew what my colors were.”

A.J. made an X with her fingers.

“You two.” Claire slid off the bed and went to her room. “I’ve got a sweater…”

Sam dumped underwear into the suitcase. Her underwear was serviceable and comfortable and she was drawing the line there. Well, almost there. For some reason, she tossed in a set of dating underwear when A.J. was distracted by Claire’s return.

“Try this.” Claire held up a pink fuzzy sweater that screamed “girl.” “Men love this sweater.”

“But Claire…” Sam looked at her tiny roommate. “It probably won’t fit me.”

“So it’s a little tight. All the better. Are there going to be any men there?”

“I don’t know.”

“If they’re going to coach you to not threaten men, it’s logical that at some point you’ll have to interact with them.”

“I like the way she thinks,” A.J. said.

Sam took the sweater and held it against her. The soft pink truly wasn’t her color, but did she look that awful in it? She looked…cuddly in a high school kind of way.

“Take the skirt, too,” Claire suggested. “You’ll be invincible.”

OH, WHAT A WONDERFUL day’s work. Each time Josh thought about that meeting, he could see Sam’s face. Her expression when he told Hennesey all about Fiery Femmes…priceless. And just wait until she got there…He grinned.

Sam had this coming to her. That would teach her to go after his clients. Technically former clients, but everyone knew Family Values was Josh’s. That she
