52: Blowflies

The recent successful negotiations with English food distribution giant, Congo, represented a major propaganda coup for the Gallagher clan. The Irish government decided not to block the deal. They saw the establishment of a mega-warehouse as a future asset for Ireland, that is when the debacle of the Kilgarney revolution had inevitably burned itself out. They were pleased to waive customs controls at the border, firstly on the materials needed to build the warehouse complex, secondly on the procession of lorries delivering stock. Of course, the Gallagher cousins were quick to paint the Irish government’s position as capitulation, rather than compromise. Just one month on from the referendum, they could proudly boast, thanks to the miracle of pre-fabricated construction, the arrival of a major place of employment, bigger even than Cunninghams.

Congo epitomised a new trend in business. When it came to menial labour, the latest thinking was people beat robots every time. Human limbs were more agile; their thinking more adaptable; in short, humans were more efficient. And wages had been driven so low by the accumulated power of multinationals that people had become cheaper to run, taking into account the limited lifetime before a robot’s technology became obsolete. Instead of using a few people to supervise multiple expensive robots, why shouldn’t a limited number of robots supervise multiple cheaply-paid people?

Ever since Graham Williams’ born-again self-righteous Christian thugs had trashed Sean Murphy’s hairdresser's shop, Orla’s brother had found only temporary work. Then he got lucky, with an interview and job offer at Congo. He came up against their controversial employment agreement, non-disclosure of working conditions plus waiving his right to give notice until he had served a minimum of twelve months, but, desperate for financial security, he accepted their offer to work as a picker and packer on the warehouse floor.

Orla broke into my work room. “Charlie, something terrible has happened! We’re smuggling Sean out of Kilgarney. Tonight, on granda’s headless-lady run. Congo have moved him to the night shift. Will you go in his place this evening? He’s not worked nights before, so the night staff don’t know him. You can wear his ID badge. He says nobody checks the photo. You’ll see for yourself. You won’t believe how bad it is!”

In her highly agitated state, Orla could give no further explanation. I argued that as a founding member of Kilgarney’s underground resistance, it was vital I should take part in the evening’s planned “headless-lady” escape, our first big operation, but it soon became clear I would have to forgo the adventure. As Orla’s closest friend in Kilgarney, it was my duty to come to her aid without question.

Ten o’clock that night, I waited to board the Congo bus outside the Lake Hotel. A long queue of listless people gradually formed behind me. I waved Sean’s ID card at the bus driver but he gave it only a cursory glance. The journey downhill past Cunninghams to Congo’s newly built complex was a short one.
