It took a second to realize which bedroom Gabriel had entered. He stood in the opening to James’s room, hesitant to go any further. Since James was a teenager, his bedroom door was always closed. Many nights Gabriel could hear the TV through the walls, which kept him awake. One evening, he had gotten so frustrated, Gabriel had gone into the hall and banged on James’s door. The TV was so loud that his brother never heard the knocks. That frustrated Gabriel even more. He walked in to tell his brother to turn it down. As soon as he entered the room, he was assaulted with a pillow. James threw it across the room at him, yelling to get out.

James was always protective of his room and never let Gabriel inside. Even though he knew he was alone, Gabriel called out for his brother. As expected, he received no answer. James can be a real jerk sometimes, but I miss him . . . I miss them all. . . Tears formed at the corner of his eyes. Time slowed to a crawl and any energy left in him escaped like air from a balloon. His vision blurred as the sadness finally overtook him.

Gabriel backed up against the bedroom door, thinking about his family, and let the tears stream down his face. I’m never going to see them again. He couldn’t hold back the tears. He cried so hard his chest hurt. He cried for his parents. He cried for his friends. He cried for his brother.

The tears finally slowed down, and after a couple of minutes, he decided being sad wasn’t going to help. With a deep sigh, he took a step farther into the room. He stood in the middle of the room and looked over all his brother’s things. A small pile of dirty laundry was tucked away next to the dresser, his old baseball gear against the far wall, and a dresser that held several picture frames propped up on top. Curiosity got the better of him, so he walked over to get a better look at them. His jaw dropped at what he saw.

A picture of James’s baseball team taken on a winning game day. Another of a girl Gabriel was sure James had a crush on. One of Mom and Dad and at least three of James and Gabriel. The picture to the far left showed the boys sitting on bleachers, each holding a hot dog and a cup of soda. It had been taken at the first baseball game Gabriel could remember. The picture in the middle was of James holding Gabriel as a baby, with their mom’s help of course. The final picture on the right had been taken just before they moved to this town. It was one of those rare occasions when James was being nice to him. That day, Gabriel was worried he wasn’t going to make any friends and hated the idea of moving from the city. James had comforted him and told him everything was going to be okay.
