FIERO

You don't decide anything here, de Archard," I growled, pointing at Vincenzo.

He had declared me crazy. Had told me that I was wrong. He didn't see what I saw. Had even tried to convince me it was better to leave her alone.

And then, just like that, he told me I had been right after all. As if it were nothing special, but an occurrence that could have happened any day.

While I was well aware of where his behavior was coming from, for the moment I just didn't want to accept that, but instead fully immerse myself in the feelings that whipped through me.

I understood nothing – and yet Vincenzo had no right to make any decision that affected me or Francesca. Not even when he dragged me into his shitty office and tried to talk some sense into me.

At least he seemed willing to ignore my insubordination. For the time being, and only half-heartedly.

"Think again, whose house you are standing in right now," he replied, crossing his arms.

"I don't care. You've declared me insane."

"I was wrong."

"Well. A little late to admit that, isn't it?" I had no idea how far I could or wanted to take this game, but for now it just felt good to have the opportunity to release the pent-up energy inside me. Before I calmed down afterward and dealt with all the details.

"We need to find this Cristian and make sure he dies," Vince continued, not responding to my question.

"I know. But not right now. I need time."

"Your daughter-"

"Stop it." As long as Cristian didn't know what Francesca had told us, as long as he didn't suspect that she had folded and that we would have a witch hunt after him, no one else was in danger either. I had a hard time mentally or out loud referring to her as my daughter. The resemblance had been obvious in the photo, but other than that photo and a name, I knew nothing else about her. Might be that she existed... but for the moment my priorities were elsewhere. "I want to talk to her. I want my wife safe as hell and that bastard nowhere near her. We'll take care of the rest and the details once your siblings get here."

"So technically, she's not-"

"If you make another comment like that, Vince, I won't guarantee anything. I will personally arrange for a flash divorce. You should tell your wife to find out more about Cristian."

"Why don't we ask Francesca about it?"

Was he setting out to attack my already thin patience? "She'll tell us what she's comfortable with. Mettere insieme la tua merda, Vincenzo. And I'll see you tomorrow."

Without waiting for his answer, I walked backward out of his office. Francesca and Amedea were still in the same spot in the foyer where we had left them, engrossed in a relatively superficial conversation.

Although I had guessed who Giorgia really was, I was now having a damn hard time getting used to the idea and especially processing what it meant.
