Chapter Nine

One year earlier

Bane Kennedy stared at the computer screen in an incredulous stupor. That was her—his predestined mate. He thought for sure his senses must be playing tricks on him, but no, there it was. He’d been waiting all his life to meet his special one. After a long, frustrating wait, he’d finally set up an account with an online dating service, hoping to broaden his search.

Against all odds his efforts had finally proven fruitful. She was beautiful with her short, light-pink hair and captivating blue eyes. She had a nose ring and a few ear piercings, but that didn’t bother him any. When he took in the rest of the picture, he saw that she had a tattoo. Judging by her appearance, he guessed she probably had a few more in places he couldn’t see. What a delicious thought.

Her name was Jade Flowers, and she was absolutely stunning. He never thought he’d recognize a woman as his true mate on a computer screen.

He’d always imagined seeing her alone in a big, open field in the golden sunshine with her long hair blowing in the breeze. Her flowing white dress would flap in the soft wind and the thigh-high slit would separate to reveal long, sumptuous legs.

Then, when he got older, his fantasy of meeting his chosen one became slightly less dramatic. He envisioned seeing her across a busy street in a crowded city. His lips would part slightly, and her long curls would bounce as she got out of a car. She would pull the tight little half jacket up over her shoulders, but it would do nothing to conceal the way her breasts bounced when she walked. Her nifty calves would have a nice diamond shape, compliments of the tall stripper heels she wore.

The wind would blow a paper out of her hand. She would reach for it in vain, fretting as it blew across the way. Then he would move in and traverse the hustle and bustle of passing vehicles to retrieve her paper. Her hand would go to her mouth as she feared he might not make it across the street with his life. But then he would. He’d hand it to her and she would thank him. They’d linger for a moment, lost in each others’ eyes. They would introduce themselves, and he’d invite her to have coffee with him.

Then after a nice exchange of pleasantries, they would get a hotel room together and make love all night. And then he would put his mark on his lovely woman and claim her forever. His little mate would belong to him and him alone.

Bane had heard it said that if you ever want to make God laugh, just tell him your plans. Well, God was probably laughing really hard then, because reality had turned out so much differently than he’d originally expected.

His mate, Jade Flowers, evidently had short hair that was dyed an unnatural color. That along with her tattoos and piercings made her look
