Morgan was standing by the sliding glass doors leading to the terrace, lost in thought.

"Dad?"

Morgan turned to face Joe, his blue eyes serious.

"Sit down, Joe. I think you know what this is about."

Sighing, Joe lowered himself into the same chair he'd spent most of the night in.

"I had no choice, Dad. And I would do it all over again."

Joe felt Morgan's hand on his shoulder, giving it a gentle squeeze, before he walked around the chair and sat on the edge of his bed.

"I'm thankful, so grateful that I can't even put it in words to be able to see the sun rise this morning. I'm extremely grateful that I get to live another day. I'm proud to have a son like you, who was, is, willing to do anything to make me better. But I want you to make a solemn promise. If my health deteriorates unexpectedly again, I do not want you doing what you did last night. Promise me."

Joe pinched the bridge of his nose, closing his eyes.

"I'm not sure I can do it, Dad."

Morgan fixed him with an unwavering stare that made Joe want to squirm in his seat. When Joe had been a child, Morgan hadn't ever raised his voice, or punished him, or lectured him whenever he'd done something wrong. He would pretty much just look at Joe the way he was right now, and Joe would feel so ashamed, he would apologize and promise never to do it again.

But Joe wasn't a child anymore. Besides, he didn't think he'd done anything wrong. Not really.

"Don't, Dad. If there's one thing I can't do, it’s to watch helplessly while you suffer. And I'm fine. More than fine. I just needed an hour of sleep."

Morgan sighed.

"I'm going to let Michaela explain how dangerous what you did was," Morgan said, picking up his phone and calling Michaela.

“How did you…” began Joe.

“I founded Shape Tech, son. I know new research when I see it.”

"Michaela, you're on speaker. Joe's with me."

"Joe, you complete, total ass! How could you do something so stupid?"

Michaela's tone made him wince, but it also made him bristle.

"I did what I had to. And I feel fine," he said, thrusting his jaw forward.

"You could have died. I told you yesterday the trial was only in its nascent stages. You might feel like your old self now, but sometimes, the ill effects will only manifest later. Please, I beg you, don't attempt it again. It was a stupid thing to do. And I want you to come for a check-up the next time you are in New York."

Joe leaned forward on his elbows, eyes fixed on the floor, chin thrust forward. He would do anything to save his dad. Why didn’t anybody get it? But there was one thing he needed to ask.

“Michaela, do you think what I did changed Dad’s prognosis?”

If she said yes, it would be so worth it, no matter what anybody said. If his actions, even if rash in hindsight, provided his dad with a fresh leash of life, he wouldn't regret what he had done.
