Philippe kept replaying his conversations with Conrad and Tanner. The more he thought about it, the more it did appear strange that Nelle and Vera had survived a massacre that had killed hundreds. They’d been hiding at the time of the attack but claimed to not remember anything concrete.

Which was to be expected; they were in shock.

There was also the news from Tanner that something strange was going on in the sea. Surely it all had to be connected somehow?

Philippe hoped that with some time to heal, the women would remember some details that they would be willing to share. Hopefully, they would put some of his fears to rest.

It took another morning to travel back to Dempsey’s farm in Kondo. This time, when they arrived, the fields were empty. Philippe scanned the front yard. It was eerily quiet; Dempsey’s farm equipment lay untouched. Dempsey was a grafter, but by the look of his crops, he hadn’t been out in a few days.

Mae stood back by the gate, peering out over the dying grass.

Philippe’s knock on the door went unanswered.

He edged along the house, peering in the window, but it was still boarded up from the night before. He was about to search the back of the house when the front door creaked open, and a grey-looking Dempsey peered out at them.

“Philippe,” he coughed into a rag, “It’s you.”

“Dempsey. You ok?”

Dempsey seemed to recoil from the sunlight, his white head ducking back into the shadow. “Whatever you are selling, I’m not buying. I told you, we’re even.”

Philippe huffed out a laugh, feeling some of his concern loosen. “Still have a sense of humour even when you’re sick.”

“I’m sick alright,” Dempsey huffed, wiping the sweat from his forehead. “This flu is stronger than the sun. Now to what do I owe this pleasure?”

Philippe couldn’t help but smile at the old man’s sarcasm. “I’m here to see Nelle and Vera. I wanted to check on them, maybe ask them some more questions.”

Dempsey spluttered into his rag, his chest rattling with the effort. “Can’t help you,” he coughed. “I did what you asked, found them somewhere in the village. I’d blink us there, but I don’t even have the energy to put my shoes on.”

Philippe was already shaking his head. “No, don’t worry about that. We’ll take a walk down there now.”

Dempsey scrunched his eyes shut, rubbing at his chest. He had an ugly scratch on the back of his hand, scabbed over and red. “They’re staying with…Miriam, above the bakers, next to the main square.”

Philippe offered his thanks, backing away from the door.

“You speak to any of the Crowns? Are they interested?” Dempsey asked, running a trembling hand through his wiry white hair. He didn’t even wait for Philippe to reply. “Nah, didn’t think so.”

He waved a hand at them before closing his eyes and shuffling behind the door.

Mae fell into step beside Philippe as they headed down the dusty path leading to the main village. “Well, he looked awful.”

Philippe peered over his shoulder at the house.
