The night of the party, Leo could hardly hold still. He figured out he could see Cam’s house from his window because, as darkness fell over the hills between them, one lone house shone brighter than all the others with lamps in every window and along the driveway as well. Cam’s house was a beacon for him, and he hoped Cam was as happy and bright as the house made him seem. He wanted his friend to have a good birthday, one full of everything he’d ever wanted. And Leo was glad he’d be there to see him get that.

He’d even convinced Antonio to let him buy Cam a birthday present. It was a small gold bracelet with elk antlers in the middle that would dangle down the top of his hand and a delicately thin chain to circle his narrow wrist.

The present was in his pocket, in a blue box. He’d chosen a dark green sweater over black jeans for tonight. It had been a long time since he’d been allowed to wear a shirt, or been able to pick out his own clothes. He was even wearing shoes, which was extremely rare. But this was the first time Antonio would be letting him out in public, so perhaps the little allowances were only there to let the rest of the world think he didn’t live his life chained to a headboard. That was far more likely than any conclusion that resulted in Antonio wanting to be nice to him.

“You look good,” Antonio said, coming up behind him and laying a wet kiss on the side of his neck. Leo didn’t even care about the sloppy kisses anymore, especially not that night.

“Thank you.”

Antonio slid his hand under Leo’s shirt and stroked his skin. “Remember, you’re my mate. What you do reflects on me. If you embarrass me at all tonight, I’ll make your life far more miserable than you would ever imagine.”

It wasn’t some empty threat, and Leo didn’t want to even consider what more Antonio could do to him. So he nodded. “I won’t shame you.”

“Good boy.” Antonio turned him around and kissed him roughly, hard enough to bruise his lips. Leo knew it was for show. Another mark of possession on him. He smelled like Antonio. Any shifter would be able to tell that. And now they would know he’d been recently kissed as well. He didn’t care. There was no one there he needed to feel shame from. He was only going to make sure Cam was okay, and happy, and then he would come back later tonight on his mate’s arm and tend to Antonio’s needs just as he did every other night. That was his life and his duty. He’d told Cam the same thing, the morning of his mating. It was only fair he would have to live up to his own word.

“Are you ready to go?” Antonio asked softly.

Leo silently nodded, and then Antonio escorted him down to one of his waiting cars.
