Chapter 9

W e arrived back at the dorm at three-thirty in the morning. Debra endued upon sharing her small room with Ingrid, and I had Nieve in my room. To say it was impossible to sleep with her so close, would be an understatement to how alive with nervous energy I was.

I laid with my eyes closed, and I kept counting my rapid heartbeats. Nieve was quiet, as she laid in a sitting position with her head resting against my dresser drawers. I’d offered her the bed, but she categorically refused to displace me.

For several hours I kept stealing glances at her in the defused light spilling through my window. Even in this utter darkness, Nieve was still the most wild and beautiful person I’d ever set my eyes upon.

Why is this so darn disturbin’ to you, Ella?!

I asked myself, more than once. Dawn was nearly upon me when I finally felt myself drift off to sleep. My dreams were violent, full of the face of the unwashed man who’d attacked me. My hands were painted red in every scene of the dream. The dreams always ended with Nieve flapping her wings and cloaking me in her presence and her wingspan, protecting me from my fears.

“Yo, Ella bella! We have to get up, you are going to be late for your test!”

Debra informed me in a serious tone. I snapped awake and popped up in a hurry.

“I’m so glad that was just a dream!”

I said to myself, then I looked over at Debra, who was white-silver haired, and milky-eyed. She grinned at me, as she seemed to be applying cream to her face.

“Sorry, forgot to warn you.”

She said, but her eyes told me a different story. She simply wanted to mess with me.

“Great, it was all real.”

I said, and then I thought of the dead man—that was real as well.

“Yeah, real, and one wild way to spend a Fall Equinox!”

Debra mused, and I rolled my eyes, as I looked up at her again.

“Why are you not wearing a glamor? What if the RA comes in on us?”

I asked, and she winged her white, cream-covered brows.

“I have to moisturize and exfoliate my real skin every day. That’s part of the secret of my dizzying good looks.”

Debra grinned wickedly and I rolled my eyes.

“Debra, you’re a fairy, you’re never going to look ugly.”

I said honestly, and she blinked at me and said, “You know that was possibly the sweetest thing anyone’s ever said to me, and I have had dozens of luva boys! I really need to up my standards.”

She said, and I didn’t deny her statement.

“Come on, you have like twenty-ish minutes to shower, then like five to run to class. Scoot!!”

Debra helped pull me to my feet. Her banshee form didn’t bother me once I got used to seeing it. Beneath the deathly white and silver, she was still the same hottie, and best friend.

I only got a few hours of sleep, and surprisingly, I was fine. I could function and I was ready for the day.
