Jax

He can’t tell, but my eyes are closed too. He still smells like tea and houseplants and sweat and arousal, and his skin is still sweet, fierce sunlight. Maybe we’re the universe’s sick joke, but if the world is really this unfair, I’m going to force it to pry him out of my hands.

Grabbing under his thighs, I pick him up and sit him on the edge of the counter. His legs wrap around my hips and his arms circle my neck as I sink into his mouth again. He still loves to play with my tongue piercing, tugging and nipping at it. When we stop, I feel eyes on my face. I open mine to see him studying me with so much intensity and tenderness it takes my breath away. Looking back, I can’t understand how I didn’t recognize Oliver from the moment he jumped out of his seat behind the bank counter and beamed at a broken, empty stranger, like he’d waited his whole life for me.

His fingers slowly rub the back of my neck, teasing my hairline. “What are we doing?”

“We’re in the cave,” I repeat with more confidence than I feel. “And we’re not getting rescued until tomorrow.”

I can hear the faint buzzing of heat lamps from the living room, the ticking of the coffee pot, the never-ending rain. Neither of us moves or says anything for a long time, like we’re deciding how deep we can go without breaking. Finally, his face relaxes into a weak smile. “Are we gonna have to conserve body heat again?”

“Definitely. Otherwise we won’t make it.”

His grin fades slightly. “There’s…” He sighs. “There’s something else I should show you first, in case it’s a deal breaker. I was going to tell you–Jax–about it after our date, if things got physical.”

“I’m sorry I left you last night.” I grab his hand as he slides off the counter and pulls me down a short hall to his bedroom. Through a door on my right, I spot a room with a purple, leopard-print bedspread, life-sized sword replicas, and Metallica posters that could only belong to one person. Ollie’s room feels unfinished and plain–the most basic Ikea bed, bins of yarn against the wall, and a big, messy watercolor landscape on the wall that looks like it was painted by either him or Megan. He’s poured all his energy and resources into the parts of the house that have to do with his daughter, and let himself disappear.

“Unlike Tristan, I don’t hold it against you.” Oliver shuts the door, even though there’s no one else in the house, and my body starts to grow warm and electric as it resurfaces more and more memories of his skin, his sounds, the things he did to me that I haven’t felt before or since. “People do wild things when they’re panicking. I should know.”

He leaves the overhead light off and switches on a dim bedside lamp, spilling a circle of yellow light like we finally figured out how to make a fire in our cave.
