Chapter 6

Travis knew he looked like a dork. Wearing only a pair of gray sweats he had cut off at mid-thigh, he waited for Russ on his front porch with a giant, goofy grin on his face. He couldn’t bring himself to care. He had succeeded in doing the one thing that none of Russ’s old lovers had been able to do. Russ had slept next to him, twice. He’d curled up and fallen asleep in Russ’s arms, and it had been a dream come true.

Sure, when he’d woken up, Russ hadn’t been in the bed with him, but he’d left a note explaining that he had to go into the infirmary for something. The note had also said that he’d be back and that maybe they could go for a quick work out before grabbing some late lunch.

Travis couldn’t believe how well he’d slept. First, he’d slept half the night in Russ’s arms at the infirmary. They’d only managed five hours or so before Russ had been discharged. They’d had another five hours after they’d made love.

Okay, so maybe Russ hadn’t actually spent the night, considering it was only late afternoon. He hadn’t run off as soon as the sex was done, though, so Travis figured he could consider that an accomplishment.

He resisted the urge to rub his bottom. He ached in a way he hadn’t in a long time. It was a good ache though. Just enough to remind him that Russ had been in him only a few hours earlier.

Russ came into view, jogging down the street at a sedate pace and looking more handsome than ever. His grin grew, and he knew at that instant that Russ would always be the only man for him. If only he could convince Russ that he would be the only choice for a life partner.

As for Russ’s claim of not being able to love someone else…well, Travis had a feeling that that was about to change.

His happy mood started to fizzle out though as Russ stopped at the end of his driveway, looking absolutely horrified. He shot off the porch and ran to his lover, dropping to his knees in front of him. “Russ? Russ, what’s the matter?”

Russ was breathing heavily and beginning to sweat. Travis didn’t think it was a healthy sweat though, not when Russ was so pale and his eyes were so wide there was white around the whole iris.

“Russ? Russell O’Neill, talk to me.”

The use of his whole name seemed to snap him into focus. “My speed,” he mumbled through tight lips. “It’s gone.”

Russ looked like he was going to be sick. This was what they’d done to him during his brief stint in captivity, Travis realized. Somehow, they’d found a way to neutralize Russ’s super power.

He put his hand on the stunned man’s back and pushed him a little. “Come on, Russ. Let’s get you back to the infirmary and see what’s going on.”
