Chapter 13

Ryann

Well, I nonchalantly, in the weirdest way possible, sort of asked Paige on a date with my boss and her wife. Staring at my plate, I hoped she’d fill the silence, but you could hear a pin drop. I wondered if she got the true meaning of the invitation, but at the same time, it scared the hell out of me if she did. I probably shouldn’t have drunk so much wine. It made my lips a little looser than I would’ve liked. Risking a glance in her direction, I saw her eyes locked on me.

Oh, shit. She seemed pensive as if she were trying to figure out what the hell I’d been talking about. She wasn’t alone—the conversation confused me, too. Maybe I caught her off guard, talking about my boss being gay. Surely that wasn’t the issue—at least I hoped not. I couldn’t be friends with someone who was homophobic. Glancing her way again, I noticed her gaze was still on me, but her mouth was firmly closed. I needed to say something.

“I realize that might be weird for you to go with me to my boss’s. The reason she suggested it was because we were talking about how you were my only friend here, and she thought it would make me feel more comfortable to have someone else I knew with me.” That sounded stupid even to me, but her expression changed, and I couldn’t tell if it was a good sign or not.

“Why did your boss think you’d be uncomfortable around her and her wife?” Her tone bordered on accusatory.

What? Oh shit. Did she think I was homophobic? “Oh, I guess because I just met her, and I don’t know her wife at all. I think she thought it would be nice to have someone else there who I knew.” Not to mention, she’d also told me it would allow her to use her lesbidar to find out if Paige at least played for the same team.

Relaxing a bit, she said, “I guess that makes sense. So, um…” She was no longer staring at me but at the wine bottle. Picking it up, she poured more into her glass. So much for her not drinking anymore.

Taking a hearty sip, she set her cup down and continued, “Is that something you’d want me to do? Go with you?” Her cheeks pinked, and I wasn’t sure if it was from the wine or if she was blushing.

Maybe it was now or never? Maybe I should put some real feelers out and see where she stood. “Well, yeah. If you’d want to, of course. Chelle is super cool, and I think it would be a good time… Or if you’d rather do something else, just the two of us, we could do that instead.” Okay. I was about to hyperventilate. That was definitely more of a “let’s go on a date,” but I could play it off if she questioned it. I felt my face heating up, and it probably matched the color of hers.
