12. A Very Odd Metamorphosis, (But it did not affect Sherlock one bit.)
We all froze at the sound of the voice, and even the tree roots seemed to recoil back into the ground. The silence was profound and terrifying as we waited to see what was going to happen next. Finally, the gnome turned to me and whispered, “What exactly is a lawn statue?”
Morgan le Fay merely smiled and stared at us. She was very attractive; being slight of build with long, copper colored hair. She wore a forest green gown with a lighter cape the color of jade. Her emerald eyes were clear and cold and seemed to hide another more bewitching side of her beyond what was visible. She had dried flowers sewn into the edges of her cape, and the belt she wore was, in fact, a willow vine woven around her waist. Several crystals and small pouches hung from the belt and contained who knows what type of potion or magic.
The gnome turned to her, and exclaimed in a nervous and trembling voice, “I did exactly as you requested, oh great Lady in Green. I pointed them in the direction of the Dark Forest. Did you mean for them to actually go into the forest? No one goes in there anymore. If you had said to send them into the Dark Forest I most assuredly would have done so, but you specifically said to point them in the wrong direction.”
“And I can assure you he truly did his best to point us in that direction, Lady le Fay,” commented Sherlock, “but it was more than obvious that your footprints did not go any further into the forest. I would have seen them if they had. The only possible way you could have gone is through the underground passage. You do realize, of course, that I have been able to successfully track you all the way from Lord Tennyson’s chambers. It is only a matter of time before we catch up to you.”
Upon hearing what he had said, I turned to Holmes and asked, “What are you talking about, Sherlock? What do you mean before we catch up to her? She is standing there right outside the tunnel.”
Sherlock pointed at the ground and replied, “What you heard and saw was simply a projected image of some type. If you look closely, you will see she is not casting a shadow.”
I looked closer and saw that Sherlock was indeed correct. Morgan le Fay was not casting a shadow! She was an image similar to the scenes we had seen of Lord Tennyson, except when she spoke, we could hear her cold calculating voice.
“So you have, Sherlock Holmes, so you have. Your skills in observation and deduction are outstanding, and you have successfully met all of the challenges I have left for you. Let’s see how well you can follow me when I do this!”
And as she finished speaking, she waved her hands in a peculiar manner and uttered
