Dom, Steph, and Pancho were all quiet when Dr. Cabrera stopped talking. But she wasnât finished.
âIâm very proud of my grandfather,â she said. âHe was the one who pulled the town together to help the man.â She took a deep breath, as if to bring herself back to the present. âSo, now, Iâm ready to answer all the questions you have. I love goats. And itâs not just because Iâm a vet.â She pointed to the picture in front of her. âThatâs Estherâs mother. I won a blue ribbon in 4H with her when I was ten. Esther and I are related.â The vet leaned back on her cushy chair, stretched, and stomped her feet before she crossed them. âSo youâre Jean Williamsâs granddaughter.â Her eyes moved from Steph to Dom. âAnd youâre her friend from Mundytown. Welcome to tiny Tapperville.â
âDonât forget me.â Panchoâs voice came from the phone. âIâm Pancho Sanchez, also from Mundytown.â
âPleased to make your acquaintance.â She nodded to the phone. âAnd now, how can I help you?â
All three asked the questions theyâd written down, and Dr. Cabrera answered. By the time they left, they knew that Esther probably went with someone she knew. Goats arenât all that crazy about strangers.
âShe would have planted her feet or pawed the ground. You would have been able to see signs of a scuffle on the ground. She might have even made a ruckus,â Dr. Cabrera said. âAnd no, Esther wouldnât have gone to the marsh unless someone led her there. Goats hate water.â
They learned that Esther often wandered off because Mrs. Ballou had a habit of forgetting to latch the gate.
âAlbertâs much older and content to stay where he is,â Dr. Cabrera said. âI was actually trying to make time to look for Esther myself. She should have been home by now.â
âDo you think someone took Esther?â
âWhat Iâm more afraid of is that she might find herself in Lost Town at night and get hurt.â
âOh!â Dom agreed with the vet on one thing. Esther was in Lost Town. But she didnât agree that Esther might have wandered there by herself. âWe think that someone took Esther.â She showed Dr. Cabrera the picture of the prints on her phone after she let Pancho know what she was doing.
âMmm. Interesting.â
âDo you know a girl named Marabella?â Dom asked the vet.
âAh, Marabella Reed. Yes, I do. Sheâs the star slugger forâ¦â
Dom didnât let her finish the sentence. âWe think Marabellaâs in on the crime. We have evidence.â
âEvidence, huh?â The vet leaned in toward Dom. âI would be surprised if that were the case. Marabellaâs a little gruff on the outside, butâ¦â
âShe was nasty to us,â Dom declared.
Dr. Cabrera cocked her head to one side. âWell, our Marabella might have got your goat, like people say, but that doesnât mean sheâd steal. And it doesnât make sense. Birdie pays her well for milking Esther.â The vet scrunched her forehead. âIâd be careful. Get to know more facts before calling Marabella a thief.â
The words gave Dom a shiver.
