Chapter 8

I’ll Find Her in Breakup Tears

Cooper

I bet you are wondering about what my mother said. Even if you weren’t eavesdropping like Cameron. How my mother talked about me sitting in the middle of ashes because I wanted someone who would light my world on fire.

She was the first girl I fell in love with. I was seventeen, she was from Michigan, and I fell off a cliff, nose-dived into oblivion, all for a girl who told me she already had a girlfriend. Her name was Skye, and she was filled with more life than I could grasp.

I remember she took me into the woods of her hometown. Skye held my hand as I experienced fireflies for the first time. She sat next to her dad as they sang and strummed guitars by the fireside. Every night I was there, she couldn’t sleep, so she would cuddle next to me, and I clung to her and told her I loved her.

Skye didn’t say it back; she just kissed me.

I only am remembering her because I remember you, Cameron. You are nothing like my first love or other loves. And I don’t want you to be, but it might be too late to make those commitments now.

I fell asleep next to my vibrators. It isn’t the strangest sentence, and I promise it isn’t the first time it has happened.

Last night I may have made a few mistakes. Taz yanked me away after I made too many public ones, as she put it. I texted Cameron I was crashing at my place. But she hasn’t responded, and I called her once, but no answer. I was going to stop by her house, but I had to help my mom with her garden. When she asked where Cameron was, I lied and said she was busy.

Now it’s Monday, and I have avoided the subject long enough. I texted her I was sick the rest of the weekend because it felt like I was, even if that wasn’t true.

Kissing strangers was my style; hurting someone I loved was never an option in my book. But there I was, feeling wild again, dancing around, having a great time, and one thing led to another. I didn’t think about it too much; I didn’t know how it might hurt anyone. But that fucking look on Taz’s face made me grow a guilty conscious real quick.

At lunchtime, I head over to Cameron’s work and find her working on a logo for a soccer team.

“The blue looks better,” Cam says to herself.

“You’re lying to yourself.” I stand behind her, and she doesn’t immediately turn around.

“No, you’re lying. Sick all weekend, huh?” Still avoids my eyes but saves her project to talk to me.

“Some freak twenty-four-hour bug.” I shrug, but something is off about Cameron.

“My mom’s event on Saturday got canceled. I wanted to surprise you, so I showed up at the party. I tried to find you, and you are at the center of the room. The only thing you were missing was a spotlight.
