Chapter 13

MIRA WEDGED HERSELF back into the corner of Solomon’s office sofa.

“How was the ride back?” he asked.

“Hrmmm. It was sort of like sitting on this couch, but with more opportunity for head trauma,” she replied. She put her feet up on a pile of documents and opened another bottle of apple au lait. Garrett had driven with the same reckless abandon on the return trip, much to her chagrin.

“It’s upsetting to hear that a Lesser Demon was behind this. You really think that it managed to achieve its objective?”

“No doubt about it. I heard the cackle before the Dark Knight cut it down.” Mira put the half-full bottle on the table and shuddered as she recalled the Lesser Demon’s final, eerie smile. Its cackle was something that any former player would recognize, a sure signal that the enemy had achieved victory.

Thirty years ago, events involving Lesser Demons never went well—most of them ended up as mitigated failures at best. Solomon had firsthand experience with this, and he looked over the finalized report with an annoyed expression.

“Troubling, but I don’t need another nuisance added to my plate right now. I’m just too busy.”

“So I’m a nuisance now, eh?” Mira needled the king.

“No, no, of course not. Actually, you being here solves some of my problems. Going back to what we were discussing before, the thing about not being able to announce you as a Wise Man right away…”

“Yeah, I remember that.”

“I have a suggestion.” Solomon put the report he’d compiled on the desk, laced his fingers together, and leaned forward—like a certain familiar administrator. It was a common pose for when they needed to have a serious conversation.

“Oh, it’s that big of a deal, eh? Looks like I’ve touched a NERV. Get it?” Mira said with a dumb grin that faded quickly. “Eh, never mind. Shoot.”

“I think that we can get away with declaring you as Danblf’s pupil and successor to the title of Elder. And as long as you do something outstanding, people will have to agree.”

It made sense. If they could pad her resume a little, then it would give her the social capital to take up her former duties and influence the direction of the nation. Once she had a solid track record, it shouldn’t cause any hard feelings among the rest of the mages that might have had their eye on the position.

“It would totally work,” Solomon said with a slight smile that faded a little as he pondered just how difficult the task would be. “Probably. It’s worth a try, anyway. Would you please consider it?”

“Well, okay. How do you think I should do this?”

Solomon took a deep breath and crossed his arms. Unlike his usual mischievous self, there was a small trace of worry on his face.

“Danb—no. I’m going to have to start calling you Mira. I can’t afford any slipups.”

“That’s fair.”

“All right, Mira. I have a task that I can’t ask of anyone else. I need you to find everyone.”

“…Everyone?” Mira repeated the word slowly while her hand stroked her chin.
