Although Anatolia's Muslims sustained greater losses in absolute terms, Armenians and Assyrians bore the greater losses proportionately, a function of their being targeted for deportation and massacre. The most thorough study of the statistical data puts the number of Armenian dead at 664,000, or about 45 percent of prewar Anatolia's 1.5 million Armenians.45 Other scholars estimate that 800,000, perhaps as many as one million, Armenians ultimately perished from massacre, starvation, and disease.46 Losses for the Assyrians were at least comparable in proportionate terms.47 The exact figures will never be known, but the result was a radical one in the truest sense of the word, the effective eradication of the presence in Anatolia of two peoples who had been rooted there for millennia.
