Pray with Me, Please!
Pope St. John Paul II had a habit of praying aloud with a person, especially if he or she asked for prayer about a particular need. So did Venerable Solanus Casey, who was a porter in a monastery. Hundreds of people came to experience the grace of simple prayer with Fr. Solanus. This kind of faith sharing brings a person into Godâs infinite loving presence.
Here is one approach. First, ask the personâs permission to pray together. Then, simply talk to God aloud: âJesus, please come and help _________. I know you love her. We place her situation in your hands, and we will watch for your help.â Be sure to leave a moment of silence. You can conclude with an expression of gratitude and confidence. âThank you, God, for hearing us and for helping _________. We know your loving kindness is without end.â Finally, ask the person what was happening as you prayed, and listen carefully to the answer. An alternative is to use a formal prayer like the Our Father. If a serious concern has been expressed, you might follow up with a phone call or text several days later.
Keep in mind that it is not the end of the world if someone refuses an invitation to pray. You can still bring the concern to God in prayer later on. When you do so, the Holy Spirit may invite you to change something in yourself or in the relationship that might be an obstacle to sharing faith through prayer. For example, God might prompt you to have a greater trust in Jesus or to let go of judgments about the person. If you pursue what needs changing by attending to your own conversion, you will become a more humble disciple and a more willing instrument of Godâs voice. Asking God to remove obstacles in us also helps us avoid the use of force or emotional manipulation.
