‘I know this is going to sound ridiculous,’ said Lisa, as they all stared at her, ‘but you need to imagine something. Right now.’ She looked distinctly uncomfortable and shuffled her feet. ‘You need to imagine you are covered, completely, by a pyramid—and that the pyramid has mirrors on every surface.’

Gideon snorted. ‘You what?’

‘Don’t,’ snapped Lisa, ‘make me repeat myself. Damn well just do it, Gideon! All of you. NOW!’

They continued to stare at her for a second or two, and then dropped their eyes as they tried to do as they were told. Dax pictured the mirrored triangles on every plane of the pyramid, gleaming in the soft light of the fire. It rose to its tip just above his head and its base was at his toes. For some reason, his pyramid was also revolving slowly.

‘Everyone done it?’ said Lisa. They nodded. ‘Gideon?’

‘Yes! I am capable of imagining a pyramid, you know!’

‘Right over your head, yes?’

‘Yes! Now tell us what all this is about. What’s going on? And why is it always me that has to ask?’

‘Keep imagining while I talk to you. Someone is trying to find us and they’re using a technique called dowsing,’ said Lisa. ‘It’s a kind of remote viewing. You lock in to certain … wavelengths … they’re a bit like radio frequencies. Energy patterns and stuff. Oh, brilliant! I sound like a healer now. Sorry, Mia, but you know I don’t do wifty-wafty!’

Mia smiled. ‘No—wifty-wafty’s doing you though,’ she countered, smartly.

‘Anyway,’ Lisa went on. ‘People like me, who find things, can do this dowsing thing. You can do the walking around with hazel twigs business, looking for water and suchlike—or you can look at a map and if someone tells you a bit about what they’re looking for you can usually pinpoint it on the map—because even the map, though it’s a bit of paper made in a printing press with thousands of others just like it, still carries these wavelengths. I don’t know how. I think the really top-end finders, like me,’ (Lisa didn’t even think of being modest) ‘we just have to think about something that someone’s trying to find—maybe touch the person who’s looking or just know them really well, like I know you lot, and that’s enough. The image comes, of where the thing is, even if you’ve never been there or seen it on TV or anything. That’s remote viewing. And if you’re really good you can even find the map co-ordinates.’

Dax swallowed. ‘Does this mean we’ve been viewed?’

Lisa pursed her lips thoughtfully for a moment, and then said, ‘I don’t think we have been viewed. Not properly. I don’t know how I know—maybe it’s them.’ She made a sweeping gesture above her head and they knew she meant the crowd of spirit people who trailed around after her, trying to get her attention. ‘They do sometimes chime in with something useful. Anyway, I don’t think whoever is trying to dowse us has actually worked out where we are.
