Jamie emerged dressed in white slacks, a midriff top and gold sandals. She looked elegant and, controversially, a little tarty. It was, I supposed, the “Jamie” look.

She inspected the plates of canapés and nodded approval. I watched as she placed eight wineglasses on the table and checked the refrigerator to make sure the wine was chilled.

After pouring herself a glass, she popped her sunglasses on and sauntered out to the pool area.

Bronte walked down the stairs and, as usual, looked cool, elegant and very fashionable.

‘You’ve done a good job,’ she said and I warily waited.

Bronte poured a glass of wine and asked conversationally, ‘from what Jamie tells me, it’s difficult to believe that was your first bi-sexual experience.’

I said nothing, just shifted on my feet, wishing I could get out of the high heels.

‘Was it? You can tell me the truth.’

‘It was…Ma’am,’ I added a little defiantly.

Bronte smiled sadly.

‘You know, if you had just come to me, I would have given you the money. I thought we were friends.’

‘Like you and Kimberly are friends?’ I shot back. ‘Or a friend like me, who collects dry cleaning, runs errands and does bookwork? You mean like that…Ma’am!’

Bronte blinked at me and then sipped her wine. It was obvious she was thinking.

‘I see,’ she said quietly. ‘I suppose we did treat you a little…’

‘Where would you like the canapés, Ma’am?’

Bronte studied me and I hoped she saw the anger and sadness I felt.

‘By the pool, I think,’ she said and, without another word, walked towards the terrace.

I watched through the glass as Bronte joined Jamie. They were talking and I wondered if Jamie was describing what I did for her.

My face grew hot but I told myself to forget it.

Just get through this until tomorrow evening! That’s all, just tomorrow evening!
