CHAPTER 17

Indi’s dad nodded at the cops in the squad car across the street as he pulled into the driveway. Her mom had her stilettos off before she even got to the front door, tossing them in the living room before disappearing into the kitchen. Indi headed straight for the stairs, eager to see if this charger would bring Brandy’s burner to life.

“You’re going to bed?” her dad asked as he closed the front door.

Indi turned. “That was the plan. Did you want me to do something?”

“Oh, no,” he sighed. “I was just thinking of watching some TV if you were interested.”

He posed it as a casual request, but Indi felt it was more like he needed her company. The charger was burning a hole in her bag, figuratively, of course. The more she thought about it, the more she found her feet were drifting up the stairs and away from him.

“Raincheck?” she replied, looking at him through half-closed eyes. “I’m really worn out after the service.”

The disappointment in his voice tugged at Indi’s guilt. “Of course. You’ve been through so much this week. I’ll see you in the morning.”

Indi felt like shit, but there was no getting around the fact that if she didn’t get to her room right now and charge that phone, her head would explode.

Indi jogged up the stairs. She entered her room, closed her door and was chill for about two seconds before dashing to her closet. She fumbled around with the boxes on the shelf, but it didn’t take long to spot the box for the pink running shoes. The phone sat inside so innocently, and Indi’s heart raced with anticipation as she pulled the charger from her purse and compared the ports. With a breath held tight in her chest, Indi brought the two together and, like Cinderella’s glass slipper, this was a match. She plugged the charger into a wall socket and slowly the bars lit up. This thing was dead flat. It would take a few minutes just to get a decent enough charge to turn it on. Indi paced the room, her eyes not shifting from those flickering neon-green bars. Just when she thought she might pop a blood vessel, the light went solid. She scrambled onto the floor and mashed her fingers against the power button. The Blackberry buzzed to life. Indi wasted no time in pulling up the text messages. They were all from the same number but there was no name saved. Indi scanned the dates. They started a month before Brandy was killed and the last message was received the day Indi washed up.

Brandy. Where are you? Are you okay? Please text me back. I love you.

Indi read through the previous messages, but the longer she scrolled, the more emotional whiplash she had to trawl through. That, and a good chunk of hardcore sexting. It didn’t help that descriptive sex acts made Indi cringe. She deduced it was a guy, judging by the constant talk of
