Fourteen:

After we waited for support and supplies, we were finally easing down into the deep breach in the city. Grendel seemed perturbed by something, but she kept it to herself. Clarke was muttering curses and swearing off the role of that guy in every scary movie.

“Come on buttercup, suck it up! You’re with the toughest chicks this side of Kansas.”

I told him, and I popped him in the shoulder for good measure. He looked unamused, and Sky chimed in, “Actually, this side of the Milky Way would be more precise.”

I flagrantly showcased Sky as I was being lowered by the guards up top.

“See, we got this, like it would have to come from another galaxy!”

Clarke narrowed his eyes and murmured, “Yeah and thanks for jinxing it for me! Next thing I know, something is going to appear form another galaxy!”

He complained and I sighed and shook my head.

“Fine, be that way, but remember I am going to mess with all your beakers and mixtures and that crucible, oh yeah baby!”

I teased him, and Clarke gave me a baleful look and be began to let the burly Nix guards lower him down.

“That is the very textbook definition of dirty pool, Hannah! I’m not gonna forget this one!”

I smiled a triumphant smile of my meaningless victory.

“What are you, an elephant?”

I sassed back, referring to the ancient cartoon. Clarke’s eyes told me he did not find me nearly as amusing as I did. Whatever was bothering Grendel was worrying me, because an ageless and timeless magus did not become so dreary for no reason. However, I would have to move on, and hope for some answers later.

“You really don’t have any shame about them old cheesy jokes. You might as well go have you a kid because you tell mom jokes.”

Clarke said, and I snorted derisively and shook my head.

“What, make another one of me!?”

Clarke jokingly muttered, “On second thought…”

Grendel repelled down and kept moving, ignoring our bantering as she almost disappeared into the hole. Clarke and I decided it was best to shut up and follow the powerful magus. Our levity would have to wait till later.

As we reached the bottom of the chasm, the ground seemed to be almost hot and it felt glassy. Sky’s eyes were glowing, and I felt the reason why moments later. Expression energy rippled through the air like molten blasts of fire—dragon flames.

“Sky, is that…?”

I began to ask, and she was already fighting her own shift to her dragon form. Scales began to spread on her body.

“Yes, apex, one of the lost blood-line.”

I frowned and I felt my danger sense spike up.

“Why would an apex be living down here?! Why would it make a fiery tunnel up to Hidden City?!”

Sky grit her teeth and said, “I don’t understand what it is I am smelling. This is the same scent mother had stored in vacuum-sealed items belonging to my auntie. She made damn sure I recognized her scent, incase she somehow ever managed to cross the boarders.”
