Chapter 8

“I Used to Be Joseph’s Little Prostitute”

All things being equal, I prefer picking up street sex workers. Face to face, it takes me but a second to know whether “chemistry” exists between us. When an escort arrives as a result of a phone or an Internet appointment, a mental adjustment almost always needs to be made. What the client visualized in his mind’s eye when speaking to the sex worker on the phone does not conform to what he sees in front of him. This usually holds true even if the worker has a photo in the paper or on the Web.

But all things are not equal. Unfortunately, picking up sex workers in the streets is more dangerous than through ads. Still, it took me almost ten years to wean myself completely from street workers. In 1976, I was not yet ready to meet only advertising sex workers. It was not only related to the instant-chemistry issue. The guys listed under the banner of “Models and Escorts” in the gay press charged twice as much as street hustlers.

In those days, to the great chagrin of the management of the St. Francis Hotel, the hustler scene in San Francisco was concentrated on the south side of this establishment, where Geary and Powell Streets intersect.

I arrived there at 7:30 p.m., quite early for street workers to be out in force. One of the few workers on duty caught my attention immediately. He was not particularly handsome, especially because he suffered from a serious case of acne. What he had going for him was youthfulness and assertiveness. The moment our eyes locked, he asked, “Are you looking for a date?”

He had an engaging smile, though his teeth were crooked. I stopped in front of him. “Well, yes, I’m looking for a date. My lover—more correctly, my former lover—is out of town and I have the house all to myself.”

“What sign are you?”

“What sign?”

“What’s your zodiac sign?”

“I’m a Taurus.”

“I’m a Virgo. We’ll be compatible.”

“Now that we know that we’ll be compatible, what is your name? Mine is Joseph.”

“Larry.” He reflected for a moment, then said, “No, I trust you. I’ll give you my real name, not the fake one I use for hustling. It’s Beauregard.”

In spite of his somewhat ordinary looks, the guy had a presence. “You’re my first ‘Beauregard.’ I like your name. Do you go by ‘Beau,’ or do you prefer to be called by your full name?”

“I prefer Beauregard.”

“How old are you, Beauregard?” I was reasonably sure that he was over eighteen but I wanted to hear it from him.

“I’ve just turned nineteen.”

In short order we agreed on a fee of fifteen dollars and what we would do in bed. Intuitively, I was absolutely certain that Beauregard would make a good sex partner. I detected a Southern drawl in his speech. While I was driving, I asked, “Where are you from, Beauregard?”

“I was born in Louisiana, raised in South Carolina, and came here from San Diego.”

“What did you do in San Diego?”

“I was in the Navy.
