Placing your pattern: Always try to cut your patterns on the grain of the fabric, especially when working with a directional print.

CUTTING YOUR PATTERN PIECES

Once you have all your pattern pieces pinned, it’s time to cut them out. Cut as closely as possible to the outside edge of your patterns. If your scissors are sharp, you shouldn’t have any issue getting clean and smooth cuts.

When all your pieces are cut from the fabric, begin to remove your patterns. Using your fabric marker, transfer any markings from the patterns to the fabric. Check the project page for any additional markings that need to be made. Another helpful trick is to label your pattern pieces. If you have adhesive labels on hand, those are perfect, but masking tape works well in a pinch. Label the right side of the fabric, and write the name of the pattern piece so you’ll know when to use it. Now you’ll always know what side is the right side and make sure to match it up!

All of this prep work may seem tedious, but you can take it from me that it’s well worth the extra time and saves headaches and confusion in the long run. Often this start-up work takes up about half the time I spend on a project (don’t worry, this time is reflected in the project time estimates!), so once you finish you can feel like you’re nearly halfway there!
