CHAPTER VI
Time was passing by...
"Did you know, lady, that King Sargon*, in addition to his other titles, was also called the keeper of gardens and a lover of new plant species?"
"It's good to have a mention of the gardens in the title. It is a reference to the original paradise. I think each of us misses it... I still fight wars, but in fact I dream about something else. It would be great if I could create a garden like from old stories. I would like people to say about me centuries later: the creator of a paradise on earth."
* He reigned in the years 2340 - around 2284 BCE
Semiramis walked along the palace paths, among roses. She was accompanied by the priestess Blom, who knew plants like no other. Her name meant a flower in the languages ââspoken in the countries where people with black skin lived. It suited her as if it had been created especially for her.
She was not very tall, plump, but not fat, with always smiling face and shining eyes. She moved with agility, smelled of the freshness of dewy earth, and glorious curly hair made a fluffy cap on her head, making her resemble an exotic flower. Additionally, she wore colorful dresses and an apron. It was knee-long. In its wide pockets she gathered strings, small rakes, styluses, bottles of liquids, things that might be useful.
"King Sargon brought back plants unknown to him from every expedition. He planted them and cared for them. The tablets we have in the temple say that thanks to him, we got to know the roses."
"They didn't grow here before?"
"In times of wars, kings used to equip soldiers with special bags. When they were in foreign lands and saw plants they did not know, they put them in these bags along with the roots. The priests who followed the troops examined them. Those that got the king's interest, were planted in his gardens. Hence we have such a great variety. But I assure you, not all of them come from here. Many of them are settlers from other lands. They have become so comfortable here that people are convinced that they have always been here."
"Just like roses?"
"As you know, lady, the goddess is fond of them. They are her symbol."
"I love roses. They resemble a woman: they delight, but they can also hurt. They are delicate, but can take a lot."
"They were cultivated in the old days already. It is said that the goddesses brought them to earth when they descended from the stars to teach people*. That they are a heavenly gift to us."
* Roses were domesticated as ornamental plants at least five thousand years ago, initially in Sumer, but at about the same time also in China.
Blom walked with the queen, but half a step behind her. Whoever experienced the privilege of moving in the company of the ruler, always did so in accordance with the palace rules. So Blom wandered not only a little behind her mistress, but was also slightly bent and tried not to meet the queen's eyes.
