Step 2: Start at the Beginning—The Title of Your Invention

The PPA that I am sharing with you relates to how my rotating label could be used on a package that comes with a dosing device. An example that you might be familiar with would be children’s liquid medication; packages typically come with a small cup attached to the package. You measure the dose by pouring the medication into the cup until it reaches the appropriate level, as indicated by markings on the cup. Of course all products these days require tamper-evident seals or closures of some kind, so I also needed to consider how that would interact with my rotating label, if at all.

I start by writing a title for the PPA that encompasses my innovation. My title states exactly what I have invented. “Rotating Shrink Over Shrink Label With Included Dosing Device and Tamper Evident Sleeve.” If you look at the drawings in my PPA after reading the title, I think the drawings almost begin to explain themselves!

Let’s try to write a title for Damon’s PPA. I think I would have chosen, “A Retractable Animal Leash That Offers Handlers Increased Control.” (Actually I recently learned from Damon his tile for the non-provisional patent application ended up “Control Leash and Method of Use.)

Write a draft of your title right away. You can always come back and refine it later after you have perfected the body of the PPA.
